چکیده

Actuators used in hard disk drives (HDD) are produced en mass and therefore their dynamic properties vary within a given tolerance bound. A nominal model representing the batch of actuators is used to design the head positioning servomechanism. Equal performance can not be expected for all actuators when such controller is used. Disk drive servomechanism is expected to provide performance with increasingly tighter tolerance as the demand for higher storage capacity continues. Moreover, physical properties of any actuator may change over time causing the degradation of performance. All these issues demand for good on-line tuning of controller. This paper explores the usage of Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) in HDD servomechanism. Improved performance of the tuned controller is demonstrated using simulation and experimental results. Keywords—HDD Servomechanism, Iterative Feedback Tuning, PID controller, Voice Coil Motor

A new approach to the design of mode switching control in hard disk drive servo systems

In a modern large-capacity magnetic hard disk drive (HDD), both fast track seeking and perfect positioning of the read/write head are required. Mode switching control (MSC) approaches are widely used to meet these requirements. This paper proposes a new approach in designing MSC with an application to HDD servo systems. The proposed scheme uses a proximate time-optimal servomechanism in the tra...

Iterative Learning for Periodic Measurement Disturbance Cancellation with Application to Disk Drive Head Testing

Introduction The challenges of compensating for periodic disturbances appears in various applications dealing with rotating machinery. For example, in hard disk drive (HDD) servomechanisms disturbances consist of both repeatable and non-repeatable nature appear in the position error signal (PES) of the head following a data track. The repeatable run-out (RRO) disturbance generally occurs at fre...

H ∞ Probabilistic Robust Controller Design for Hdd Servomechanism

Challenges in designing head positioning servo controller suitable for very high density HDD (above 1 Tbits/in) comes from the issues of external and internal disturbances and to make the controller robust in spite of parametric uncertainty. Servomechanism employing dual-stage actuator can achieve bandwidth required for such high TPI and robust control design has been proposed in the past to ad...

Iterative Feedback Tuning in Fuzzy Control Systems. Theory and Applications

The paper deals with both theoretical and application aspects concerning Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) algorithms in the design of a class of fuzzy control systems employing Mamdani-type PI-fuzzy controllers. The presentation is focused on twodegree-of-freedom fuzzy control system structures resulting in one design method. The stability analysis approach based on Popov’s hyperstability theory...

Discrete-time composite nonlinear feedback control with an application in design of a hard disk drive servo system

In a typical disk drive servo system, two or more types of controllers are used for track seeking, track following, and track settling modes. This leads to the problem of mode switching among these controllers. We present in this paper a unified control scheme, the discrete-time composite nonlinear feedback control, which can perform all the above functions in hard disk drive (HDD) servo system...
